Elliott Wave Trader

About Elliott Wave Theory | Avi's Library | Webinars

About Elliott Wave TheoryElliott Wave theory understands that public sentiment and mass psychology moves in 5 waves within a primary trend, and 3 waves in a counter-trend. Once a 5 wave move in public sentiment is completed, then it is time for the subconscious sentiment of the public to shift in the opposite direction, which is simply a natural cause of events in the human psyche, and not the operative effect from some form of “news.”
In fact, the former Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Alan Greenspan, understood this fact well. During his tenure, in several hearings in front of the Joint Economic Committee, Mr. Greenspan noted that the idea that the Fed can prevent recessions is a "puzzling notion" . . . Rather, the stock market is “driven by human psychology” and “waves of optimism and pessimism.”
This concept is inherent in the aggregate actions of individuals. Based upon these concepts, it is clear that man's progress and regression does not take the form of a straight line, nor does it occur randomly in nature. Rather, it progresses in 3 steps forward, with two steps back within the primary trend.
This is the basis of the Elliott Wave theory. This mass form of progress and regression seems to be hard wired deep within the psyche all living creatures, and that is what we have come to know today as the “herding principle,” which is what gives the Elliott Wave theory its ultimate power.
This theory has been proven time and time again throughout history. This is the basis behind the Elliott Wave, which is enhanced through the concept of Phi ; the Golden Ratio. These concepts have been understood by Plato, Pythagoras, Bernoulli, DaVinci and Newton. Historic structures have been built by architects of famous Greek structures, such as the Parthenon, and even as far back as the architects of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, who recorded their knowledge of Phi as the building block for all man nearly 5,000 years ago.
For a more detailed understanding of this concept and application, I highly suggest reading Elliott Wave Principle, by Frost & Prechter.
Elliott Waves Basics
A move in the direction of the trend is considered an “impulsive” move, and will constitute 5 waves in the primary direction. A count-trend move is considered a “corrective” move, and constitutes 3 waves, which are counter to the primary direction.
Even within the impulsive 5-wave move, waves 1, 3 and 5 move in the direction of the primary trend, and waves 2 and 4 will be counter-trends in the opposite direction.

Since the market is “fractal” in nature, these impulsive and corrective movements of the market are occurring at all degrees and in all time frames. That means that the smaller components, or sub-waves, have the same basic shape, form, and pattern as the larger components.

In financetechnical analysis is a security analysis discipline used for forecasting the direction of prices through the study of past market data, primarily price and volume.[1] Behavioral economics and quantitative analysis use many of the same tools of technical analysis,[2][3][4][5] which, being an aspect of active management, stands in contradiction to much of modern portfolio theory. The efficacy of both technical and fundamental analysis is disputed by efficient-market hypothesis which states that stock market prices are essentially unpredictable.[6

Eye on LVLT, GEO, C, ANAD, PDK, VHC

by Sinisa Persich, TraderHR.com, Thu February 7th, 2013

Level 3 Communications (LVLT) is in a rising triangle formation, consolidating its steep move from just above 18 in late November to near 25.
The stock is at a triple top just below 25 going back to September, a break of which could lead to next targets near its March 2012 high around 27 1/2.

Research In Motion Ltd (BBRY) Attracts Eleventh-Hour Option BullsBBRY speculators are swarming soon-to-expire call strikesby Andrea Kramer 2/14/2013 12:48 PM

The shares of Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY - 14.65) have erased their early losses, muscling notably higher in afternoon action. What's more, some options speculators are rolling the dice on more upside for the BlackBerry maker this week, with soon-to-expire calls flying off the shelves.
At last check, BBRY has seen roughly 130,000 calls change hands -- a 61% mark-up to its average midday volume, and twice the number of BBRY puts exchanged. Most active is theFebruary 14 call, which has seen more than 17,800 contracts traded on open interest of fewer than 11,300 contracts, pointing to a heap of new positions. Plus, a healthy portion of the calls have crossed at the ask price, hinting at buyer-driven volume.
Digging even deeper, the 14-strike calls traded at a volume-weighted average price (VWAP) of $0.42, meaning the buyers' profit will increase the higher BBRY moves north of $14.42 (strike plus VWAP) through tomorrow's closing bell, when February-dated options expire. So far, BBRY has traded as high as $14.86, suggesting the calls are already profitable. The maximum risk on the trade is the initial premium paid.
However, not everyone on Wall Street is so optimistic. Despite outperforming the broader S&P 500 Index (SPX) by 36 percentage points during the past three months, BBRY sports just four "buy" or better ratings, compared to 11 tepid "holds" and 16 "sell" or worse suggestions. Plus, the average 12-month price target on the stock is a meager $11.25 -- a significant discount to BBRY's current share price -- and short interest accounts for more than one-quarter of the stock's available float.
As alluded to earlier, the shares of BBRY dropped right out of the gate today, thanks to news that former CEO Jim Balsillie sold his remaining stake in the firm. However, the stock has since bounced back, and was last seen 4.7% higher to flirt with the $14.65 level.

Should BBRY resume its longer-term uptrend, adding to its year-to-date advance of more than 18%, a round of upgrades, price-target hikes, or a short-squeeze situation could add contrarian fuel to the fire.

Guest Post: Visualizing Vince Farrell's 10 Investing RulesSubmitted by Tyler Durden on 02/20/2013 - 10:22
As the markets once again approach historic highs - the overly exuberant tone, extreme complacency and weakness in the economic data, bring to mind Bob Farrell's 10 investment rules.
These rules should be a staple for any long term successful investor.  These rules are often quoted yet rarely heeded - just as they are now. Farrell became a pioneer in sentiment studies and market psychology. His 10 rules on investing stem from personal experience with dull markets, bull markets, bear markets, crashes and bubbles. In short, Farrell has seen it all and lived to tell about it. Despite endless warnings, repeated suggestions and outright recommendations - getting investors to sell, take profits and manage your portfolio risks is nearly a lost cause as long as the markets are rising.  Unfortunately, by the time the fear, desperation or panic stages are reached it is far too late to act and we will only be able to say that we warned you.
