Budget DisarrayUS Set to Restage Greek Tragedy
The US has more in common with heavily indebted southern European countries than it might like to admit. And if the country doesn't reach agreement on deficit reduction measures soon, the similarities could become impossible to ignore. The fiscal cliff looms in the near future, and its not just the US that is under threat. By David Böckingmore... [ Forum ]

Susan Mary AslopA Two-Continent Hostess

William Smith/Associated Press

Jacqueline Kennedy and President Kennedy arriving at the home of Joseph Alsop in 1961.By LIESL SCHILLINGERPublished: November 9, 2012

IN January 1961, President John F. Kennedydropped by Joseph Alsop’s house on Dumbarton Avenue in Washington after the inaugural balls to unwind with a band of revelers over Champagne and turtle soup.

Kennedy was always welcome at the Georgetown home of the outspoken, hawkish Alsop and his elegant wife, Susan Mary; but a year and a half later, the president nearly spoiled one of their dinners by talking at such length in the garden with the guest of honor, Charles E. Bohlen (whom he had just appointed ambassador to France), that the lamb got cold. The Washington Post’s Katharine and Don Graham, the philosopher Isaiah Berlin and other guests waited hungrily for the president and ambassador to come to table.
“Something is going on,” Susan Mary told her husband later that night.
“You think so?” he responded, skeptically. That “something” turned out to be the Cuban missile crisis.
“American Lady,” a new biography of Susan Mary Alsop by Caroline de Margerie, a French judge and former diplomat, reveals the influence and insight of the American hostess, who lived so elegantly in the public eye, and so passionately when no one was watching.

Google's Legal Morass Could Extend To Android, TooBY David Zielenziger | November 08 2012 11:19 AM

It's an open secret in Silicon Valley that Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), the No. 1 search engine, is under investigation by authorities in the U.S. and Europe for alleged monopolistic practices in search and advertising.

Earlier this year, Google paid a record fine of $22.5 million to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission when it settled charges dealing with privacy issues for its Google Members, a competitor of Facebook (Nasdaq: FB), the No. 1 social network.
In August, the FTC hired Beth Wilkinson, a well-regarded Washington lawyer and spouse of “Meet the Press” host David Gregory, as a principal leader of its probe into Google issues.

Meanwhile, Google has acknowledged it's being probed by the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice as well as by the European Commission. No charges have been brought, but Google, in both its Mountain View, Calif., headquarters and Washington, has beefed up its legal staff.
Now a new wrinkle has emerged: As market researchers such as IDC report on the smartphone market, it looks as if Google's Android OS has a commanding market share.
In the third quarter, for example, Android took 75 percent of the market. The share for iOS from Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) was next at 15 percent, folllowed by BlackBerry from Canada's Research in Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM), Symbian and Windows from Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT), the No. 1 software developer.
